Sony PlayStation Vita sales fall sharply after Japanese launch (Digital Trends)

Vita

Mentioned by Bloomberg earlier today, sales of the PlayStation Vita have fallen by nearly 80 percent during the week that ended on December 25 according to tracking firm?Media Create. Sony sold approximately 325,000 Vita units on December 17 and 18, but only sold about 10,000 units a day during the following week. Sales of the PlayStation Portable beat sales of the PlayStation Vita by approximately 25,000 units. In addition, Nintendo saw massive sales of the 3DS during the same week and nearly sold half a million units. That pushes Nintendo over four million units sold for the entire year, a fact that Nintendo officials mentioned in a recent press release.?

PS-Vita-300x300Analysts are pointing at the rise in popularity of smartphones and tablets as the cause of the Vita?s poor sales numbers.?The Wi-Fi model of the PlayStation Vita costs about $320 and the?3G/Wi-Fi model costs approximately $385 in Japan. The expensive pricing of the device is likely a stumbling block when it comes to a purchase decision. When the Sony handheld launches in the United States in?February, the?Wi-Fi model will be priced at $249 and the??3G/Wi-Fi model at $299. However, the Vita also requires the purchase of a?Sony memory card that starts at $20 for the 4GB size and ranges up to $100 for the 32GB card. Sony is also planning on selling a $40 ?starter kit? that includes a 4GB memory card,?screen cover, card case, cleaning cloth,?headphones and carry pouch.

With the recent price cut of the Nintendo 3DS, Sony may have a difficult time convincing consumers to purchase the more expensive Vita over the $169 3DS. However, the Vita is expected to launch with a lineup of 25 launch titles in the United States including Uncharted: Golden Abyss. Nintendo struggled initially on the 3DS with a lack of first party titles, but released Mario Kart 7 to please core Nintendo fans at the end of 2011.?

Josh's top apps of 2011

More apps, more better.

Being the "apps guy" is an interesting position. It means I get tasked to play with apps all day long, each and every day. It feels a lot like being an adventurer, wandering through a dense (really dense) forest, where danger and suspense lurk around every corner.

As such (and because I'm more the average Joe user than you might think), my list is a combination of my most-used apps and some apps that are so great, they still deserve recognition (despite not being on the daily list).

With that said, here's some of my favorite and useful apps from the past year.

African football drama to begin in Swiss boardroom

Published: 29 Dec 2011 - 10:16:51

The first African football drama of 2012 will unfold in a Swiss boardroom as Namibia continue a battle to get Burkina Faso kicked out of the upcoming Cup of Nations.

Namibia claim Cameroon-born Herve Zengue was ineligible to play against them in qualifiers for the 2012 African showcase and want to replace Burkina Faso at the January 21-February 12 tournament in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

Having had two appeals rejected by African football governing body CAF, the Namibians have turned to the Switzerland-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to reverse what official Barry Rukoro calls a "travesty of justice".

CAS will meet early January and hear the case against Chechnya-based Zengue, who is married to a Burkinabe but does not fulfil any of the FIFA criteria to play for the country of his wife.

Although Burkina Faso coach Paulo Duarte has been dismissive of the Namibian appeals, he did not include the left-back in his provisional squad for Group B fixtures against Angola, Ivory Coast and Sudan.

Ivory Coast and Ghana are favourites for the Cup of Nations in the absence of defending champions Egypt and other regular participants like Algeria, Cameroon, Nigeria and South Africa.

New CAF Footballer of the Year Yaya Toure heads a galaxy of stars seeking a second title for Ivory Coast while third-place Andre Ayew, a son of legend Abedi 'Pele' Ayew, is a potential match-winner for four-time champions Ghana.

Senegal are blessed with an abundance of consistent scorers like Moussa Sow and Demba Ba as they chase a first crown and Gabon, Guinea, Morocco and Tunisia could go far.

Botswana and Niger appear for the first time along with Equatorial Guinea, who owe their place to being co-hosts of a tournament which switches to uneven-number years from 2013 to avoid clashing with the World Cup.

With two Cup of Nations tournaments in as many years, the 2013 qualifiers kick off early January before the 2012 tournament starts and the 15 teams to join hosts South Africa will be decided over three knockout rounds.

Nigeria will not relish a February visit to Rwanda, who have been revitalised by new Serb coach Milutin Sredojevic, and record seven-time African champions Egypt face a potentially tough task at improving Central African Republic.

Unless the Pharaohs play sooner, the February 29 Bangui fixture could offer 178-cap midfielder Ahmed Hassan the chance to overtake retired Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Al Deayea and become the most capped footballer.

Fixture congestion means these second round fixtures are scheduled for the last day of February while the return games will be staged only in mid-June after two weekends of 2014 World Cup qualifying action.

Algeria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia are seeded to win the 10 four-team World Cup groups and reach the final qualifying phase.

But the Ivorians must get past Morocco, Ghana have to contend with Zambia and Sudan and Guinea threaten Egypt, whose American coach Bob Bradley will be acutely aware that African successes have not been matched in the World Cup.

Cameroon, another team under new management with Frenchman Denis Lavagne replacing Spaniard Javier Clemente, must face Demcratic Republic of Congo and Libya without suspended star striker and captain Samuel Eto'o.

The record four-time CAF Footballer of the Year did not appeal against a 15-match ban after instigating a cash-related players' strike that forced the cancellation last month of a friendly against Algeria.

Esperance of Tunisia defend the CAF Champions League title with the biggest threats to the 'Blood and Gold' possibly coming from former winners Al-Ahly of Egypt and TP Mazembe of DR Congo.

Surprise CAF Confederation Cup winners Moghreb Fes of Morocco, are among the Champions League hopefuls next year and runners-up Club Africain of Tunisia look set to mount another strong title challenge in the second-tier competition.

Const. Kees Wijnands, media relations for the Ontario Provincial Police in Perth County, confirms the crash to E! News.

According to Wijnands, Bieber's grandparents were driving about 90 minutes outside of Toronto when an icy slush buildup on the road pulled the couple's Hyundai Santa Fe into a ditch and rolled the vehicle, which eventually landed back on its wheels.

Bieber's grandfather was taken to Stratford General Hospital, where he was treated for broken ribs and released the same day. The singer's grandmother was unhurt.

Later in the evening, Bieber's mother, Pattie Mallette, took to Twitter to express her feelings following the incident.

"Count your blessings &forgive ur parents always," she tweeted. "U never know what tomorrow holds!!!"

Later, Mallette added, "Thank u all for your love and prayers. Papa is sore but he's ok! My mom has a broken and swollen finger but she's tough as nails."

Hack shows Android Ice Cream Sandwich on the Kindle Fire (Digital Trends)

Android Ice Cream Sandwich Amazon FireWhile manufacturers begin to announce their own official Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update schedules, hackers are hard at work modifying the source code to function on other devices.

In this case it?s Android developer JackpotClavin who has squeezed Ice Cream Sandwich on to the Amazon Fire tablet, and although it?s not quite ready for everyday use, it?s not far off. Based on CyanogenMod 9, the developer hopes the build and accompanying video will inspire others to get involved with the project.

On the positive side, the homescreen and widgets work, plus you can install the Android Market as well as download apps. However, those apps don?t always respond as you?d hope, and video doesn?t seem to work at all. There are also issues with the internal storage, with apps unable to write to the required section.

If you love tweaking Android, or are curious as to what the very latest version looks like on the Fire, give it a try. If you?ve already installed CyanogenMod 7 or a different custom ROM, then the process sounds similar. Liliputting.com has further instructions if you?re interested.

For those who would rather wait for a more stable, working build for Amazon?s popular little tablet, you can see ICS in action in the video below.

Football: Villas-Boas admits Chelsea's title hopes in tatters

LONDON, Dec 27 (BSS/AFP) - Andre Villas-Boas conceded Chelsea's Premier League title hopes suffered a severe blow after his side dropped home points in the 1-1 draw with Fulham on Monday.

Villas-Boas's team have now drawn their last three games and while last week's stalemate at Tottenham was regarded as a creditable result, failing to beat Wigan and Fulham must be regarded as major disappointments for a team with ambitions to top the table.

And having seen his side reduce the gap on leaders Manchester
City to seven points two weeks previously, Villas-Boas admitted
the failure to build on that result meant his team's challenge
had once again ebbed away.

City's draw at West Bromwich Albion meant the manager's worst
fears of a 13-point deficit were not realised.

But with both Roberto Mancini's side and Manchester United lying 11 points clear of the Blues - who will drop to fifth if Arsenal beat Wolverhampton Wanderers on 27th December - Chelsea's prospects of closing the gap look slim.

Aston Villa will visit Stamford Bridge on December 31 but Villas-Boas admitted he was accounting for maximum points from two home games.

"I think it's pretty difficult," said Villas-Boas when asked about his team's chances of closing the gap. "If we had had a good December, which would have been good with six points from these two home games, we would have had a chance.

"But bearing in mind this draw, if they (City and United) do their jobs, it'll be very difficult for us to win it.

"You assess things as they are. There's no big drama in terms of how we look at things. But you have to be sufficiently realistic.

"That is the perspective we have to make at the moment: it's
difficult. It's not impossible. You cannot say that. But we have
to focus on our position at the moment and make a real
assessment.

"Maybe the Premier League is over for us at the moment. We'd targeted the December fixtures as an ideal situation to find out
what would happen in the Premier League.

"We continue to do that. There is always tension for you to
get results in a massive club like this one. You have to be real.
You cannot live under false expectations when the gap is this
big."

Villas-Boas plans to strengthen his squad in January by
signing a centre back, with Bolton's Gary Cahill his main target.

"We are trying to close the deal on a central defender. I
don't think we'll do much more than that. Maybe one player more,"
Villas-Boas said.

"A central defender will be our priority. We had initial
talks with Bolton, but that doesn't mean a deal will be
concluded. We will see."

Juan Mata's 47th minute goal was cancelled out by Clint
Dempsey's 56th minute equaliser, providing a timely lift for
Martin Jol's side after the 5-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester
United.

Strikers Bobby Zamora and Andy Johnson were both missing from
the Fulham team and Jol admitted he was unsure when they would
return.

"Zamora had to pull out with an Achilles problem. Andy Johnson, in the same training session," Jol said.

"Andy's had this groin injury, so maybe he'll be back in the week. It was on Christmas Eve, the day before yesterday. Bobby, I don't know. The Achilles is always a bit different. Johnson is a bit different.

"And Damien Duff pulled out with a calf problem he's been feeling for the last six weeks or so."

Romney makes big push in Iowa, sensing opening

(AP) ? Mitt Romney has stepped into the center of a perfect storm in Iowa. And he's going all in.

He's sensing an opening to win next Tuesday's caucuses and looking to take advantage of it.

Romney is campaigning hard in the eastern region of the state, where he performed well in his failed 2008 race. He launched a bus tour and has a new crush of advertising intended to bolster his closing argument that he's the most electable candidate against President Barack Obama.

It's thanks to a combination of luck and planning that Romney now finds himself in strong contention for an Iowa caucus victory that would provide a boost heading into the next contest, in New Hampshire, where the former Massachusetts governor's standing is strong.

Darlene Love and other traditions return to 'Letterman' (VIDEO)

Darlene Love,?the Lone Ranger, and meatball target practice have all become holiday traditions on?David Letterman's 'Late Show.'

Think holiday traditions and mistletoe, eggnog and caroling come to mind. David Letterman's Christmas includes target practice at a giant meatball, the Lone Ranger and singer?Darlene?Love.

Each has become part of CBS "Late Show" lore through the years, their appearances anticipated by fans like wrapped presents under a tree. The traditions return Friday.

Comic Jay Thomas will be back to try to knock a meatball off the top of a Christmas tree with a football and recount his Lone Ranger anecdote again.?Love?will sing "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" as fake snow flutters to the stage.

"The best traditions are the ones you can't plan," said Rob Burnett, executive producer of "Late Show."

"These happened very organically on our show and it is very silly and very goofy. It makes sense with the sensibility of the 'Late Show' to be part of our tradition."

Letterman's on-set Christmas tree is frequently decorated with oddities, such as the meatball on top instead of a star, angel or bow.

It all started one night back in 1998 when New York Jets quarterback Vinny Testaverde was a guest. He and Letterman picked up footballs and began tossing them at the tree, aiming for the meatball. Watching their failures impatiently from the wings was Thomas, former quarterback at tiny Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, N.C.

Thomas had discussed trying the target practice with Letterman before the show, but no one told that to stage manager Biff Henderson. He blocked Thomas from going out onstage.

"I fake to the right and Biff goes to catch me and I run around him like a scramble," said Thomas, who picked up a football and threw with laserlike accuracy at the meatball, accomplishing in one throw what the NFL quarterback couldn't in several.

Testaverde has been forgotten, but Thomas is invited back each year to see if he can repeat his feat.

Around the same time ? Thomas isn't sure exactly when ? Letterman heard about a story Thomas told of his time as a radio DJ in the South when he and a friend had to give a ride to Clayton Moore, star of television's "Lone Ranger." We won't be spoilers; Letterman has called it the "best story I've ever heard."

Fritz Strobl, M.D.: 10 Ways to Combat Holiday Stress

Some of the problem can be attributed to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), not simply stress. It's the time of year when we may leave for work when it's dark and come home after the sun goes down. Bright, full-spectrum light for 30 minutes in the morning may help. (As pretty as they are, nighttime Christmas lights don't count!) Walking outside is great not only for the sunlight but also for the exercise. Even if it's chilly, bundle up and get outside during the day -- build a snowman, head down the road to visit a friend in the neighborhood or walk to the store rather than drive.

Pudgy passengers prompts state ferries capacity change

The Washington state ferry service isn't going to start turning away hefty passengers, but it has had to reduce the capacity of the nation's largest ferry system because people have been packing on the pounds.

  1. Don't miss these Health stories

    1. Christmas wish: Little listeria victim is home

Coast Guard vessel stability rules that took effect nationwide Dec. 1 raised the estimated weight of the average adult passenger to 185 pounds (84 kilograms) from the previous 160 pounds (73 kilograms), based on population information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

During the past 20 years, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States and about one-third of American adults are now considered obese, the CDC says on its website.

The state ferry system has complied with the new stability rules by simply reducing the listed capacity of its vessels, Coast Guard Lt. Eric Young said Wednesday.

"That has effectively reduced the amount of passengers by about 250 passengers or so depending on the particular ferry," said Young, who is based in Seattle. "They generally carry about 2,000, so it's down to 1,750 now."

With that many passengers, the ferry wouldn't tip over even if everyone ran to the side at the same time to look at a pod of killer whales, he said.

The state operates 23 white and green vessels on 10 routes across Puget Sound and through the San Juan Islands to British Columbia. Carrying more than 22 million passengers a year, it's the biggest ferry system in the United States and one of the four largest in the world, Coursey said.

The ferries themselves could be contributing to passenger girth. The galleys cater to customers looking for fast food they can eat while looking out the windows at the scenery and seagulls. Calorie counters typically aren't buying the hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken strips.

"We do serve light beer," said Peggy Wilkes who has worked 20 years for the food concessionaire, Olympic Cascade Services, which serves food and drinks on 12 of the state ferries.

(AP) ? Pounding rain from a tropical storm swelled rivers and sent walls of water rushing through the southern Philippines while people were asleep, killing more than 200 with scores missing, officials said Saturday.

Some of the dead were swept out to sea from the worst-hit coastal cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan in the Mindanao region, which is unaccustomed to the typhoons that are common elsewhere in the archipelago nation.

Cagayan de Oro city councilor Alvin Bacal said 107 people had died in the flooding in his city alone, citing military figures.

In Iligan, 79 bodies were recovered in the city after more than 12 hours of continuous rain from Tropical Storm Washi overflowed a river and sent muddy floodwaters cascading from nearby mountains, Mayor Lawrence Cruz said. About 250 people are unaccounted for in Iligan, said military spokesman Lt. Col. Randolph Cabangbang.

A man in Cagayan de Oro said he heard a cry for help around 10 p.m. while the floodwaters were still low.

"Suddenly, there was a very strong rush of water," the man, who was not identified, told a local TV station.

Ayi Hernandez, a former congressman, said he and his family were resting in their home late Friday when they heard a loud "swooshing sound" and water quickly rose ankle deep inside his home. He decided to evacuate to a neighbor's two-story house.

"It was a good thing because in less than an hour the water rose to about 11 feet (3.3 meters)," the height of the ceiling of his house, he said.

Civil defense administrator Benito Ramos said 18 drowned in floodwaters in central Negros Oriental province, whose southern tip was nipped by the eye of the storm later Saturday.

The floodwaters were waist-high in some neighborhoods that do not usually experience flooding. Scores of residents escaped the floods by climbing onto the roofs of their homes, Cruz said.

Those missing included prominent radio broadcaster Enie Alsonado, who was swept away while trying to save his neighbors, Cruz said.

Rep. Rufus Rodriguez of Cagayan de Oro said that about 20,000 residents of the city had been affected and that evacuees were packed in temporary shelters.

Television footage showed muddy water rushing in the streets, sweeping away all sorts of debris. Thick layers of mud coated streets where the waters had subsided. One car was shown to have been carried over a concrete fence.

Authorities recovered bodies from the mud after the water subsided. Parts of concrete walls and roofs, toppled vehicles and other debris littered the muddy streets.

Rescuers in boats rushed offshore to save people swept out to sea by the raging floodwaters. In Misamis Oriental province, 60 people were plucked from the ocean off El Salvador city, about 6 miles (10 kilometers) northwest of Cagayan de Oro, said disaster official Teddy Sabuga-a.

About 120 more were rescued off Opol township, closer to the city, he added.

He said an island in the middle of the Cagayan de Oro river was inundated, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or people missing.

Cruz said the coast guard and other rescuers were scouring the waters off his coastal city for survivors or bodies that may have been swept to the sea.

An 80-year-old woman drowned after being trapped in the first floor of her flooded home in Zamboanga del Norte province. A 30-year-old man and a 10-year-old boy also drowned, said provincial disaster officer Dennis Tenorio.

Washi, the 19th storm to hit the Philippines this year, came ashore in eastern Mindanao and blanketed the region with thick rain clouds 250 miles (400 kilometers) in diameter.

It quickly cut across the region overnight and was over the Sulu Sea by midmorning Saturday. It was then headed for Palawan province southwest of Manila and was expected to cross the narrow province before dawn Sunday, said forecaster Leny Ruiz.

Ruiz said the weather bureau's records show that storms that follow Washi's track come only once in about 12 years.

Lucilo Bayron, vice mayor of Puerto Princesa in Palawan, told ABS-CBN television he has already mobilized emergency crews but local officials have not ordered an evacuation "because it's not raining and the weather is still fine here."

Ramos, a former army general, said by law two army divisions ? about 20,000 men ? in Mindanao and part of the central Philippines are supposed to help with rescue and relief work, backed up by hundreds of local police, reservists, coast guard officers and civilian volunteers. However, he could not give an estimate of how many are actually involved.

Col. Leopoldo Galon, military spokesman for the eastern section of Mindanao, said 420 soldiers have been assigned for disaster duties. There was no immediate comment from the western Mindanao military spokesman.

Ramos said the high casualties in Mindanao could be attributed "partly to the complacency of people because they are not in the usual path of storms" despite four days of warnings by officials of an approaching storm.

He also said heavy rains fell on nearby Bukidnon province's vast pineapple plantations, which sit on a plateau that drains rainfall through a river system that runs through Cagayan de Oro. Mountains near Iligan were denuded, also causing the flash floods and mud flows that swamped the city, he said.

Storms and typhoons that normally pass through the northern and central Philippines are pushed farther south of the country by cold winds during the northern hemisphere's winter season late in the year.

Back-to-back typhoons in September left more than 100 people dead in the northern Philippines.

93% Drive

Driver: If I drive for you, you give me a time and a place. I give you a five-minute window, anything happens in that five minutes and I'm yours no matter what.I tend to spend most of my time during a film figuring out what is flawed about it, but every once in a while, I am graced with a film where I can sit down and enjoy every minute of it. That's exactly what I got from Drive, a hyper-violent, gruesome, tense, and throughly entertaining film throughout. Not only was it supremely entertaining, it is also wholly original; as well as a masterful lead from indie-guru Ryan Gosling, stylish direction from Nicolas Winding Refn, who all contribute to making Drive one of the best films of the year. Ryan Gosling stars as Driver, who spends his days as a Hollywood stunt driver and a worker and a car repair shop. By night, Driver drives (yep, there will be probably hundreds of uses of the word "drive" in this review) criminals to and from their heist. When a heist involving his neighbors husband who was recently released from prison goes wrong, and the criminals find out who Driver really is, it's time for him to take charge of the situation and to do whatever it takes to get payback and stay alive. I guess the first thing I'll talk about is the fact that it in no way is an action film. It is a tense drama that features some strong violence. There are some defining action moments, but this is mostly a slow paced thriller, which was definitely a brilliant aspect pertaining to the film's style. The first hour or so consists only of strong character development, and a lot of leading up to the last forty minutes where a lot of mindless yet awesome action occurs. The action sequences are arranged quite well. The whole film itself has sort of an art house feel to it, and this action seems pretty gritty, and pretty realistic if I may say. Don't mistake this for another Fast and Furious film, this is its own movie, and the action here is something [similar] to what would really happen in a situation like this. The only thing that was over exemplified was the blood, there was a lot of blood. For anyone who enjoys gruesome films, this is right up your alley. Even if you are into superhero movies, this is for you; according to actor Ryan Gosling (found HERE).Speaking of Ryan Gosling, 2011 seems to be the year of Gosling, as he's starred in the hit romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love (my review can be found HERE), and the upcoming Clooney film The Ides of March. He was also in Blue Valentine, The Notebook, and Lars and the Real Girl. Drive is his best film so far. Even judging by the original trailer, you could tell Gosling would be great. He was spectacular. Seeing Gosling's character strolling down the street, blood stains all over his super-cool Scorpion Jacket is a pleasure to watch. The supporting cast are also definitely great too. I'll start with my favorite of them; Albert Brooks, who switched over from his usual good guy character to a bad-ass man-in-charge, and Brooks' performance is masterful, scary, and sheds some blood. Hellboy star Ron Perlman is also a favorite of mine in this, and is a great addition to an already well-picked cast. The film featured other great performances from Bryan Cranston, Oscar Isaac, Christina Hendricks, and Carey Mulligan. The film gets it's amazingly original arthouse style due to the fantastic direction from acclaimed Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson, Valhalla Rising, and another Ryan Gosling film Only God Forgives). Nicolas's directing style is wholly unique, and wholly original, as well as wholly entertaining, and wholly beautiful. What I love the most about his directing style, as far as indie films go, was not only his lack of complexity (I mean that in a good way), but his arthouse style was very unique. I was absolutely mesmerized by it; it is almost impossible to describe, you have to see it to believe it.Drive is one of the best experiences I've had watching a film. It's always good when a movie ends, and you realize that it was flawless (as well as giving it a huge round of applause, as my theater did). Drive is a very fun, gory, gruesome, but has a sense of tense drama moments (which basically consists of the entire first hour until the hyper-violent era of the film occurs), as well as a mesmerizing performance from Ryan Gosling, and great direction from Nicolas Winding Refn, who all make this film that is destined to become a classic.Driver: When you get your money, his debt's paid. He's out for good and you never go near his family again. You understand?

Jackson daughter tells 'Ellen' about acting dreams (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Michael Jackson's daughter says she was inspired to be an actress after seeing her father in the film "Moonwalker."

"My dad was in the movie `Moonwalker' and I knew he could sing really well, but I didn't know he could act," Paris Jackson told talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, according to a transcript of the episode to air Thursday. "I saw that and I said, `Wow, I want to be just like him.'"

The film featuring Jackson's signature dance move and other videos was released in 1988.

Paris said her father encouraged her and did improvisation sessions to develop her skills. The 13-year-old has been cast alongside Larry King in a film based on a new children's book, "Lundon's Bridge and the Three Keys," which is in early stages of development.

The Internet Movie Database, known as IMDB, shows the film is tentatively scheduled for a 2013 release, although filmmakers have not presented the teen's proposed acting contract to a Los Angeles court as required because she is a minor.

Paris also talked about the lengths that her father took to protect her identity for an episode that will air on Thursday.

She said her father protected her and her two brothers from the media, such as by placing them in masks or dressing them in costumes when they were in public. She said she initially thought wearing the mask was stupid, but later came to realize that it was for her and her brothers' protection.

She said no one recognized her when she began attending school after her father's death in June 2009.

"I was like, yes, I have a chance to be normal," she said.

Jackson's children have since been in the public eye, appearing onstage at their father's televised memorial service, the Grammy Awards and other television appearances.

ICC dismisses charges against Rwandan suspect (AP)

THE HAGUE, Netherlands ? International Criminal Court judges dismissed charges Friday against a Rwandan rebel accused of involvement in the murder, rape and torture of Congolese villagers by a Hutu militia in 2009.

The judges ordered the release of Callixte Mbarushimana, saying there is not enough evidence to support the charges against him.

Prosecutors said they would send the case to appeals judges and quickly filed a request to halt Mbarushimana's release pending the outcome of the appeal. If judges reject the request, the court has to find a country willing to accept Mbarushimana before he can be released and it is not clear how long that could take.

Prosecutors had accused Mbarushimana of being a senior member of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, known by its French acronym the FDLR. The group is accused of unleashing savage attacks on civilians in the North and South Kivu provinces of Congo as a "bargaining tool" to win power.

If he is freed, Mbarushimana would be the first suspect released from ICC custody since the court's inception in 2002.

In February 2010, judges refused to confirm charges against a Darfur rebel accused of attacking African Union peacekeepers, but unlike Mbarushimana the rebel, Bahar Idriss Abu Garda, was never taken into custody.

In an unusual case at the court, prosecutors accused Mbarushimana of contributing to crimes from a Paris apartment "by orchestrating an international campaign of propaganda and extortion" to force Rwanda to accept the return of the rebels who had fled the country after its 1994 genocide.

In a majority decision, a three judge panel said evidence presented at a preliminary hearing in September was not strong enough to merit sending the case to trial.

The evidence was "not sufficient to establish substantial grounds to believe that the Suspect encouraged the troops' morale through his press releases and radio messages, and, therefore, he could have not provided ... a significant contribution to the commission of crimes," two judges wrote in their decision. The presiding judge at the September hearing, disagreed, saying Mbarushimana should have been sent to trial.

Nick Kaufman, the lawyer who represented Mbarushimana at the preliminary hearing, praised the decision.

"We welcome this brave decision which is a moment of truth and vindication for Callixte Mbarushimana," Kaufman told The Associated Press in an email.

Mbarushimana was arrested in Paris in October, 2010, and transferred to the court in The Hague.

He faced 11 charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity but always maintained his innocence.

The FDLR was established by former guerrillas accused of genocide in Rwanda's 1994 ethnic slaughter. After moving to Congo, the FDLR launched attacks on Rwanda aimed at ousting the government in Kigali.

Knowing they could not win a conventional military campaign, the rebels retreated to the dense forests of eastern Congo and from there went on a yearlong killing spree that left hundreds dead and forced thousands from their homes.

FDLR fighters "killed, raped and tortured civilians in this region. They carried out pillaging and burned down entire villages," deputy prosecutor Fatou Bensouda told judges in September. Women were raped, often repeatedly and by several attackers in turn, she added.

After the Rwanda genocide, Mbarushimana went to work as a software programmer for the United Nations in Angola and then Kosovo.

He was arrested in Kosovo at the request of Rwanda but released in 2001 because Rwanda failed to properly prepare his indictment. He was later indicted by the Rwanda war crimes tribunal, set up by the U.N. in Tanzania. But his case was dropped.

Gregory Alex, a senior U.N. official who has worked in Rwanda and Congo and has long wanted to see Mbarushimana face trial, told the AP he was disappointed by the decision.

"He should be arrested and tried for his crimes. There should be loud criticism of this," he said.

Alex said the order to release Mbarushimana comes at a time when authorities have been making headway in efforts to dismantle the FDLR.

"We've been making good progress," he said, adding that 169 FDLR fighters surrendered in November.

Has Herman Cain's Campaign Reached the End of the Line? (Time.com)

Darryl Webb / AP

Darryl Webb / AP

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain addresses the media Nov. 8, 2011, in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Herman Cain took days to ?reassess? his presidential candidacy before suspending it on Saturday, but it shouldn?t have taken long for him to realize that his campaign was finished. Allegations that Cain conducted a 13-year extramarital affair only hastened the dimming of his star. The campaign had already faded, beset by earlier reports of sexual harassment and startling knowledge gaps revealed under the scrutiny of national attention. His support had been shriveling for weeks; the conservative pundits who saw a liberal witch-hunt in the first round of accusations gave up trying to salvage his candidacy. It was hard to know if Cain would do the same. No 2012 hopeful has been as inscrutable or unpredictable as the former pizza company CEO, and few appeared to relish running for President quite as much.

There is a script for presidential candidates, but Cain never had an interest in following it. In the space of a few months, he rocketed from obscure Tea Party darling to Republican frontrunner without much money or organization in key primary states. Instead he was boosted by free media, memorable performances during the glut of national debates and a snappy tax plan that would have thinned the wallets of most of his supporters. At a moment when the U.S. is gripped by complex problems, Cain put an emphasis on simplicity: 9-9-9 had a catchy ring, even if the numbers didn?t add up.

(PHOTOS: Herman Cain Through the Years)

Cain?s campaign was fun and freewheeling; at times it seemed constructed entirely on the fly. He had a penchant for spouting outre ideas ? barring Muslims from his administration, building an electric fence to keep out illegal immigrants, swapping hypothetical U.S. hostages for al-Qaeda detainees ? and then walking them back, chiding the media for twisting his words or failing to recognize a joke. Lingering concerns about his grasp of foreign policy were exacerbated by a badly flubbed answer to a simple question about Libya. His ads went viral for their strangeness; the image of his mustachioed aide Mark Block blowing a plume of smoke at the camera will remain among the most indelible of the campaign. When he was teetering on the ropes amid the first batch of harassment claims, he walked into the National Press Club and dropped the jaws of gathered reporters by crooning a rendition of the gospel number ?He Looked Beyond My Faults.? He was not, as he liked to remind everyone, a typical politician.

And this was the core of his appeal. At a moment of extreme frustration with the political status quo, he used his powerful personal story to sell change, promising strong, uncluttered leadership in Washington. Cain is an amalgam of a few fetishized Republican types: the businessman capable of restoring fiscal rectitude, the outsider pledging to reform the capital, the anti-government conservative capable of draining the swamp with sheer will.

The first signs of the Cain surge came when he captured a Florida straw poll in late September. He peaked the following month, as primary voters fleeing Rick Perry?s flagging campaign began to view Cain as a pure conservative foil to Mitt Romney. Even embroiled in controversy, he retains strong Tea Party support. And for many of supporters, the color of his skin is a bonus: he is a one-man rebuttal to persistent accusations that their rejection of Barack Obama was a function of race. Steve Deace, an influential conservative radio-show host in Iowa, summed up Cain?s appeal succinctly. ?Number one, we would love to have an outsider. Number two, there are a lot of white conservatives tired of being called racist,? Deace told TIME earlier this month. ?People are giving him the benefit of the doubt because he?s an outsider and because he?s not white.?

(MORE: Cain Suspends Campaign Under ?Cloud of Doubt?)

But none of that would have helped were it not for Cain?s magnetic personality. Even Republicans who sneered at his lack of seasoning confessed to being charmed. Cain?s Republican rivals praised him effusively, though this may be because they didn?t perceive his rise as a long-term threat.

They weren?t the only ones. Since the beginning of his campaign, skeptics in the media and party establishment have been suspicious that Cain was running only to burnish his brand, sell books and inflate speaking fees. He tried to chart an unconventional path to the nomination, drawing adoring crowds in states without much tactical import and skipping retail spadework in key primary battlegrounds like Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. (On Wednesday, as he mulls his fate, Cain is crisscrossing Ohio ? ?a general-election bellwether, but not a state worth his limited resources early on in the primary.) At the height of his rise, Cain slipped off the campaign trail altogether to hawk his latest book, This is Herman Cain! My Journey to the White House. At times, the campaign seemed like one big book tour ? the logical extension of a self-help empire run by a former radio talk show host given to speaking in the third person ? that morphed for a month into the hottest show in politics.

In his absence, the race will lose its only genuine political outsider (though he was once a Washington lobbyist and a member of the Kansas City Fed) as well as a vessel for Tea Party frustrations. But his ideas still hold considerable sway: the appeal of his 9-9-9 plan lingers in flat tax put forth by Rick Perry, whose campaign seems a potential landing spot for Cain?s supporters. Over the past month, some of those voters have been flocking to Newt Gingrich, but Cain still polled in the mid-teens in two polls conducted nationally in November. If those voters flee as a bloc, it could be enough to cement Gingrich?s place atop the field or propel Perry back to relevance?and pose a threat to Mitt Romney in the process. As we?ve seen, Republican primary voters are a fickle bunch; more than half in both Iowa and New Hampshire regularly report that their minds aren?t yet made up. The candidate who can best bottle Cain?s brand of business savvy and homespun conservatism is the likeliest to rope in the passel of passionate voters who flocked to Cain in the first place.

A shrewd businessman knows when an investment has gone bad, and Cain ? a former math major who crunched numbers for the Navy ? could surely read a poll. Some of his rivals were? trying to nudge him toward the door; last Tuesday, both Michele Bachmann and Jon Huntsman suggested the allegations Cain faces had done irrevocable damage to his candidacy.

(MORE: Mark of the Non-Denial Denial)

He clearly had, and effectively folded his campaign on Saturday. But even if he had chosen to proceed, he was unlikely to retain enough support to notch a strong showing when the voting begins in January, or amass enough money to keep him afloat beyond that. The Cain Train had wrecked, whether he chose to end his campaign or not.
